HCC to offer Spanish course for medical personnel

 Housatonic Community College next semester will offer a course in Spanish for medical personnel.

The three-credit course will on focus vocabulary and content related to medical field. It will provide nurses, doctors, and EMS personnel with the necessary Spanish language tools for the delivery of health care to Spanish-speaking patients.

.           Participants will develop Spanish language skills and be exposed to the vocabulary and other language skills necessary in medical settings such as hospitals and doctors' offices, including language related to reception, general examination, symptoms, and prognosis.

This course, which has Elementary Spanish I as a prerequisite and parallels Elementary Spanish II,   continues the development of the four basic skills: comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, with emphasis on pronunciation and aural comprehension.

Selected passages from Spanish health magazines, literature, or Internet as well as dialogues involving healthcare scenarios will be used to facilitate the development of reading, writing and speaking skills related to the health field.

The course will also provide an introduction to the diversified Spanish culture and its role in health phraseology. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary and pronunciation in cross-cultural Spanish speaking patients.

The class will he held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:50 p.m., in Room 221 in Beacon Hall.

Registration for the Spring semester is going on now. Students can register online through Jan. 30. A formal registration sessions will be held Thursday,  Jan. 15, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Late registration sessions will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 21,, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 22, , 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.; and Friday, Jan. 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A special registration session for senior citizens and high school partnership students will be held Friday, Jan. 23, 1:30 to 3 p.m.
