Bluefish off to 0-2 second half start

On a night that will forever go down in York Revolution lore, P.J. Rose crushed a game-winning walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Revs to a 2-0 record in the second half, with an improbable 7-6 comeback victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish, in front of 4,778 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday night.  It was Rose’s first homerun of the season, and the second walk-off homer in team history.

The Revs found themselves behind 4-0 in the third inning.  Brandon Sing opened the scoring with an RBI single, and after a 21-minute rain delay, Jesse Hoorelbeke cleared the bases with a three-run double to deep center.

York came back quickly though.  Josh Johnson doubled with one out in the home half of the third, and after moving to third on a groundout, scored on Keoni DeRenne’s infield hit. 

 

The Revs then drew closer in the fourth as Jason Aspito drove an RBI double to left-center, and later scored on Carl Loadenthal’s RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

 

Daryl Harang fired four scoreless innings of relief to keep the game close, but Hoorelbeke doubled home two more runs in the ninth, providing what seemed to be perhaps the finishing blow for the Bluefish.  The Revs, however, had other ideas.

 

Johnson, Loadenthal, and DeRenne all walked to leadoff the bottom of the ninth inning, setting the stage for Rose’s heroics.  On a 1-0 pitch from closer Andy Cavazos (0-2), Rose turned on a fastball, sending a majestic drive on to the porch in right, setting the Sovereign Bank Stadium crowd into a frenzy.  His teammates raced out of the dugout and surrounded home plate, where Rose threw off his helmet and jumped into the pile, creating one of the most memorable images in Revs history, and perhaps for years to come.

 

Notes: Rose accomplished something that his manager, Chris Hoiles, did on May 17, 1996 with the Baltimore Orioles.  With his team down three in the bottom of the ninth, Hoiles hit a grand slam to win a game against the Seattle Mariners on a 3-2 pitch with two outs.  According to Baseball Almanac, Hoiles is one of only 23 major leaguers to ever hit a walk-off grand slam with his team down three, just as Rose did on Saturday night.  Rose also joins Kennard Jones (June 30, 2008) as the first two to club walk-off homers in Revs history.  It was York ’s fourth slam of the season, the most ever hit by the Revs in a single season.  It was also the second grand slam of the week, hit just six days after Matt Padgett’s ninth inning slam iced a comeback win at Lancaster .  The Revs improve to 12-7 in one-run games, a mark that leads the league.  They’ll look to make it three straight to open the second half on Sunday at 5 p.m., when Dave Gassner faces Esteban Yan at Sovereign Bank Stadium.  It is an Autograph Sunday, with Catch on the Field, and Kids Run the Bases postgame presented by rabbittransit.  It is also Seniors Stroll the Bases Day and Church Bulletin Day.  Any Senior can stroll the bases before the game at approximately 4:20 p.m., and all attendees 55 and over will receive a special discounted ticket for $7.  Those fans who bring their church bulletins to the box office when ordering tickets can also receive the special ticket discount of $7 for any available Field Box seat.  Gates open at 4 p.m.
