Spring is a stressful time in the lives of birds. They have travelled a long distance migrating. Upon arrival, they have to compete for territory and find a mate. And then begin the process of building a nest, incubating eggs and raising young. All this occurs in just a few months as they prepare for their migration back to southern regions in the fall.
Bird feeding in the spring provides the supplemental nourishment birds need to recover from migration. If migrating birds arrive at well-stocked feeders to "re-fuel," they will not only stay for the summer, but will probably return the next spring. The backyard where they raise their young will be their destination when they return the following year.
