New Britain will be the setting for the state finals of the Elks' National “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest where three boys from Fairfield will be vying for the state title and a ticket to New England Finals. The contest will be held this Saturday where the local youths will compete against the other district champs from throughout the state. St. Thomas' Alexander Vlandis will shoot in the 8-9 age group as a result of his victory in the district contest held at Fairfield Warde High School in January. Matthew Becker, Stratfield School student, is the entrant in the 10-11 bracket, having bested last year's New England finalist at the district shootoff. Will Lucas, Ludlowe Middle 12-13 victor faces the other district winners for the state title.
Winners in New Britain advance to the New England finals to be held in Portland Maine in March. Success in that contest earns the winner entry into the National Championships held in Springfield in April.
The contest is held annually with 3 million youths participating nationwide starting at the local level and hosted by local Elk lodges. All participants and their family are guests of the Elks organization throughout the contest. Fairfield Elks 2220 will sponsor the three locals in their quest for a championship.
