Roosevelt Dime to play Ridgefield

Roosevelt Dime is a group with songs that “are catchy toe-tappers, real feel good stuff” (Sing Out Magazine). If you are in the mood for a delightful fun evening, this is the band you want to come out and hear. The quintet is Brooklyn–based and combines elements of acoustic jug-band blues, classic New Orleans soul and neo-folk to create its own sound Steamboat Soul. Among the instruments they play are banjo, electric and washtub basses, percussion, trumpet and woodwinds. The group will be at CHIRP on Tuesday, June 5, hopefully in the park, otherwise the Ridgefield Playhouse. This concert has been very generously underwritten by Ridgefield resident Bettye Turitto. Bring the whole family and grandma too for this one. Rain or shine you don’t want to miss them.

Roosevelt Dime began its career, as have many musicians, both subway and street performing in New York City. But this was not just another group to rush by on your way from here to there. Written up in the New York Times the reviewer deemed them ‘a perpetual crowd pleaser” and wrote that the band “often has commuters soulfully stomping their feet in the subway and passersby lindy-hopping in the park.” To date they have released three albums and garnered almost uniformly great reviews. Boston Pops Holiday Concert returns to Webster Bank Arena

BRIDGEPORT – Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, LLC has announced that a press conference and cocktail reception will be held Wednesday, May 30^th at 6:00 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena to announce the return of the Boston Pops Holiday Concert.

 

“The Boston Pops Holiday Concert is a beloved show and we’re proud to bring it back to Connecticut,” said Howard Saffan, president of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, LLC.

 

Webster Bank Arena will welcome on Wednesday City of Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. Members of the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra will perform.

 

“We’re very happy that the Boston Pops Holiday Concert will be coming back to the Webster Bank Arena,” said Finch. “I invite everyone to take part in this wonderful family outing to celebrate the holidays.”

 

The Boston Pops Holiday Concert last performed at the Arena in December 2008. Additional show details will be released Wednesday. Webster Bank Arena, southern Connecticut’s premier sporting and entertainment venue, is conveniently located off Interstate 95 exit 27 and Route 8 exit 1 at 600 Main Street, Bridgeport. Upcoming events include Cirque Du Soleil/Dralion, Carrie Underwood, American Idol Live and Rush.

Bridgeport's Del Prete Italian Pastry Wins Award in Great Cake Bake Off!

BRIDGEPORT: Del Prete Italian Pastry of Bridgeport, Conn. won an award for "Best Filling" in Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo's 90th Birthday Great Cake Bake Off. Eight regional bakeries worked feverishly to bake their wildest creations, which were judged by local celebrities, the Twice Baked Twins, during the Zoo's 90th birthday celebration last Saturday, May 19.   The local bakeries that also participated in the Great Cake Bake Off include Billy's Bakery of Fairfield, Adam's Bakery of Fairfield, DiSorbo's of Hamden, Dorazio Sisters Bakery of Newtown, Lucibello's Italian Pastry Shop of New Haven, Luigi's Italian Pastry & Wedding Cake Center of Bridgeport, and Stew Leonard's of Danbury. Each bakery was instructed to create a three tiered, frosted, zoo and birthday themed cake to be judged on taste, look, and theme. Remember September Acoustic Rock Band Kicks off Summer at Captain’s Cove This Sunday

WHO: Remember September (www.rememberseptember.com), an upcoming 7-year-old acoustic rock band from Trumbull. Remember September has been honored to perform at major events and casino shows alongside several legendary bands and in front of thousands of fans, who have shown a warm appreciation for our music. These acts include: Train, Chicago, .38 Special, Average White Band, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Johnny Winter, Randy Travis, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, The Guess Who, Steve Vai, The Spin Doctors and several others.

WHAT: Remember September plans a rousing kick off to its summer season at Captain’s Cove in Bridgeport. Going into summer, the band plans an active schedule that will encourage audiences to donate  funds or gift cards for the troops  for its 5^th annual benefit performance, August 11^th, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

'The Bread Winner', a Script in Hand Playreading at Westport Country Playhouse

A comedy as relevant today as when it was penned, “The Bread Winner” by W. Somerset Maugham, the author of “The Circle” and “The Constant Wife,” will be presented as a Script in Hand playreading at Westport Country Playhouse, on Monday, June 25, 7 p.m.  The reading will be directed by Anne Keefe, Playhouse artistic advisor, who is also curator of the Script in Hand series. Casting will be announced soon. Tickets to the one-night-only event are $15.

“The Bread Winner” tells a tale of affluent families in 1930 suburban London. When spoiled children find their parents boring and entitled wives take their spouses for granted, what are hassled and overworked husbands to do? These self-absorbed lives are shaken to the core when one husband makes a shocking decision in this timely, comic satire about wealth and privilege.

Keefe said, “Ever since Joanne Woodward introduced me and the Playhouse to Maugham’s ‘The Constant Wife,’ and spurred a host of revivals all over the country, I’ve been drawn to ‘The Bread Winner,” which almost seems to be a companion piece, only this time talking about the husband’s unconventional behavior, rather than the wife’s.  It’s stunning that so many of Maugham’s plays seem as fresh today as they were when written…and as truly gaspingly funny.”

The Man, The Myth, The Legend lecture to be first in lunchtime series on May 29 at noon

The first program being offered at The Barnum Museum since the re-opening last month, will be The Man, The Myth, The Legend, presented by Kathy Maher, Executive Director/Curator. The program will take place on Tuesday, May 29 at 12:15 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to the lecture, which will be held in the People’s United Bank Gallery, connected at the back of the museum’s historic structure.

Ms. Maher’s talk will explore the many sides of P.T. Barnum and bring his spirit back to life in Bridgeport for the first time since the historic museum closed in June 2010 due to damage received during the tornado. The name alone conjures ideas of imagination and extravagance. Known to most of the world as the ‘Great American Showman,' Barnum did more than create shows of curiosities and oddities. P. T. Barnum embraced the dream of a truly democratic nation, and in doing so, inspired a new American society to reach beyond the limits of ordinary expectations and to see the world as a place of opportunity and wonder.

Following the lecture, visitors will be able to view a unique exhibition called Recovery in Action in the People’s United Bank Gallery. This exhibition allows visitors to gain insight into the complexities of disaster recovery for some 25,000 artifacts from the museum.

“The historic building itself is a work of art, but we have had to close it for public safety and so that restoration work can be done,” commented Kathy Maher, Executive Director/Curator for The Barnum Museum. “Since our goal is to keep educating and presenting programs reflective of the life and times of P.T., this talk is a perfect way to refresh the minds of the community about the many contributions he made, not only in Bridgeport, but statewide and across the continents,” raved Maher.

Recovery in Action is funded in part by the Department of Economic & Community Development’s State Historic Preservation Office and Bridgeport’s Downtown Special Services District. Grant funding from the Connecticut Humanities Council has allowed the museum to consult with top scholars in the field in order to plan new exhibitions that will be installed once the historic structure is restored.

The original Barnum Institute building, designed by the architectural firm Longstaff and Hurd, was completed in1893. It is owned by the City of Bridgeport and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Optimus 14th Annual Golf Tournament is June 12th

 

Optimus Health Care, Inc. will be holding its Annual Charity Golf Tournament. The 14th annual event will be held on Tuesday, June 12th at the Mill River County Club.

 

It will begin at 11:30 AM for lunch and a 12:45 PM shotgun start. The fee is $200 per player, if paid by May 25th. There will be a raffle and silent auction, along with a hole-in-one, longest drive and closest to the pin contests.

 

Funds will assist the uninsured and underinsured patients at our sites in Bridgeport, Stratford and Stamford. Last year approximately 55,000 persons in the region received care from Optimus.

Memorial Day picnic slated for Fairfield Museum following parade

FAIRFIELD: Fairfield Museum and History Center (www.fairfieldhistory.org) plans a day of fun and games for the entire community as it hosts annual community picnic on Memorial Day, May 28^th, after the town parade from noon to 3 p.m. to commemorate the holiday. The museum will also offer free admission for the day to its new IMAGES 2012 exhibition and will unveil 9 new self-guided walking tour signs.

“The Memorial Day Parade is a wonderful tradition in our town,” said Michael Jehle, executive director of the Museum “We are encouraging everyone who attends the parade to picnic with us at the Museum and bring a picnic lunch or buy great hot dogs and burgers from Kiwanis and enjoy a full afternoon of activities, along with the opportunity for a self-guided walking tour with our new signs.

“Try your hand at some water-balloon games, enter a watermelon eating contest and pick a partner for the three-legged race. It’s a great way to relax with friends and family. Our museum gift shop will also be open for buyers who are seeking unusual gifts at great prices and with some great bargains."

"Books Worth Talking About" set to start at Westport Country Playhouse

Westport Country Playhouse and Meryl L. Moss Media Relations, Inc. are partnering to enrich the theater-going experience with a new literary salon series called “Books Worth Talking About!” Launching in June, the program will feature a pre-show discussion with prominent authors followed by a performance of a Playhouse production. The themes of the literary salons and theatrical productions will complement each other.

 

The inaugural salon and its parallel Playhouse production on Wednesday, June 13, will focus on memoir writing as a healing tool. Nina Sankovitch, author of “Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: A Year of Magical Reading,” a memoir in dealing with the death of her sister, will be interviewed from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Playhouse’s Sheffer studio by Tessa Smith McGovern, memoir collection editor, writing professor at Sarah Lawrence College and founder of eChook Digital Publishing. 

 

Following at 8 p.m. will be a performance of “The Year of Magical Thinking,” based on the National Book Award-winning memoir by Joan Didion.  Featuring Maureen Anderman, the play is about hope and renewal following the author’s loss of her husband.

Cyclists gearing up for MS ride

HARTFORD - The 31st annual Bike MS: Red Thread+Steelcase Ride, presented by Louis Dreyfus Commodities, will be held on Sunday, June 3, in Windsor and Westport.

More than 1,100 cyclists shifted gears to pedal up to 100 miles and raised more than $536,000 during the 2011 ride. This year, the ride hopes to raise $560,000.

The 2012 Bike MS: Red Thread+Steelcase Ride, presented by Louis Dreyfus Commodities, will feature two locations on Sunday, June 3; at Griffin Center in Windsor and Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. The Windsor ride features 100-, 50-, 25-, 12- and 2-mile routes while Westport offers 50-, 25-, and 10-mile rides as well as a kiddie ride.

Her Haven, a new community-focused non-profit, launches May 17 at Fairfield University

Fairfield University Interior Design student Carey Dougherty, of Monroe, Conn., founder and CEO of Her Haven, the new nonprofit organization that focuses on designing a personal space in the home of a deserving woman in the community, has been transforming environments since the age of six.  On Thursday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., Her Haven and Fairfield University’s student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) will unveil design plans for its first two Habitat for Humanity projects at a launch celebration, “Designing a Difference,” in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. The public is invited to attend and learn more about ways in which it might support Her Haven and its mission to empower deserving women with limited resources through transformative design. For this first venture as an official 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, Her Haven has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County, the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and a team of Fairfield  Interior Design program students on two Habitat for Humanity projects for Nordia Black and Elizabeth Bosques, both of Bridgeport.

The students have split into two teams, each of which are working on designing a personal space for Black and Bosques in each woman’s new Habitat home.  The team members, all of whom enthusiastically volunteered to work with Her Haven for the unusual experience it offers, will present their team design concepts at the launch celebration.  Interior Design student Jenine Beck was energized by Dougherty’s “enthusiasm, professionalism, passion and philanthropy” and came on board to “use our education in such a positive way.  It really isn’t what I can get out of it, but rather what I can give to it.”  And student Jim Metzger said, “As a male, I am thrilled to be part of this organization…So many women in my own life have helped me so much, it is my way of giving back or paying it forward.”

Dolan School of Business students also played a role in Her Haven. Students in “Managing Nonprofit Organizations,” a special topics course taught by Catherine Giapponi, Ph.D., associate professor of management, helped Dougherty develop a complete business plan.

Dougherty sought out Habitat for Humanity as a partner because the two organizations share the common goal of community interaction with volunteers and donors as an element of their missions.  Both organizations do work that provide volunteers and donors an opportunity, as Caitlin Scanlan, director of development at Habitat for Humanity pointed out, “to learn about the challenges faced by low-income families and the impact safe, healthy and affordable housing can have in our community.”  Scanlan continued, “The opportunity to partner with Her Haven will be a wonderful experience for Elizabeth and Nordia…Creating a space that is designed specifically for each woman is a special opportunity that they would never have been able to provide for themselves.”

UB Design Students to Showcase Work for Library Renovation

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Invites you to: Have Fun. Get Dirty. Beat Cancer.

WILTON: On Saturday, May 19th, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Connecticut Chapter will host the second annual Pineapple Classic at the Greenwich Polo Club in Greenwich, CT. Currently, over 525 participants are registered. LLS hopes to have 800 by event day.

The Pineapple Classic is a fun, Hawaiian-themed 5k run with obstacles throughout the course. After the race, a luau will be held with a beer garden, food, and entertainment. Participants compete for speed and for the best costume. In return, participants are asked to raise funds to help LLS advance lifesaving cancer research and patient services. LLS hopes to raise over $110,000 during this fun filled day.

There is still time to sign up! Anyone 8 years of age or older can participate. Register in single-gender or co-ed teams of two or more or as an individual. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest teams in all categories.

“This event was a huge success last year raising $80,000 for the Connecticut Chapter,” said Dina Mariani, Deputy Executive Director of the Connecticut Chapter. “We are so thrilled that it’s now an annual event and that it’s already grown so much in year number two!”

Teams are grouped based on whether they plan to walk or run, and teams that plan to compete to win are categorized at Kekoa (Hawaiian for warrior). The entry fee is $65 per person ($30 for children). Fee includes race entry, tech shirt, goody bag, and entry into the luau for food and drinks. Participants are also asked to raise a minimum of $50 to support lifesaving cancer research. John Wilhelm to speak at the Greater New Haven Labor History Association

NEW HAVEN ‑ National labor leader John Wilhelm, president of the union UNITE HERE, will discuss the status and future of the labor movement June 3 at the annual meeting of the Greater New Haven Labor History Association.

Wilhelm, who began his union involvement in New Haven, will also present a posthumous award to the late Vincent Sirabella, longtime leader of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union. Sirabella’s widow Jean will travel from Washington, D.C. to accept the award on her late husband’s behalf.

“Vinnie Sirabella was an extraordinary labor leader, truly a prophet,” said Wilhelm. “Working people in New Haven are better off today because of his amazing work in such historic struggles as the three strikes of Local 35 at Yale in the 1970’s and his militant support of the 1975 strike by the New Haven Federation of Teachers.

“UNITE HERE members throughout North America are better off because he inspired so many rank and file leaders and staff,” Wilhelm added. “ The whole labor movement today would be better off if more labor leaders had listened to him.”

Sirabella is one of two recipients this year of the Labor History Association’s annual Augusta Lewis Troup Preservation Award, named for the first woman to ever hold office in a national union. Troup was elected Corresponding Secretary of the the International Typographical Union in 1870, and later ran a pro-union newspaper in New Haven with her husband.

The year’s second Troup award goes to Anthony Riccio, author of The Italian American Experience in New Haven, Cooking with Chef Silvio, and Boston's North End: Images and Recollections of Italian Neighborhood. It will be presented by Stephen Kass, Association Board member and coordinator of the Labor History in the Schools legislative initiative.

The event will also include a tribute to the late David Montgomery, pre-eminent labor historian who taught at Yale University for over 20 years who passed away last December; music by Frank Panzarella; and a preliminary conversation about the pros and cons of transitioning to become the Connecticut Labor History Association.

The event runs from 1:30 until 5 p.m. at 267 Chapel Street, New Haven. It is free to all current GNHLHA members with a $10 suggested donation for all others. Individual memberships are $25 per year.
